NOTE 03 · CHAPTER I

The first night somewhere new

HABITAT    Hotels, guest rooms, new apartments

Sleep is usually worse the first night in an unfamiliar place.8 In one study, a network in the brain’s left hemisphere stayed more watchful during deep sleep that night, and odd sounds sent its way woke people more easily.9 Dolphins and some birds sleep with half the brain at a time;10 people may keep a smaller night watch of their own.9

ALSO OBSERVED

Night one of every trip. Night two usually goes better.8
