NOTE 08 · CHAPTER II

A small favor, a bigger day

HABITAT    Neighborhoods, workplaces, parks

In Chicago’s Maggie Daley Park, people who gave a stranger a cup of hot chocolate expected it to lift the stranger’s mood a little. It lifted it a lot more.20 Givers judged the drink; receivers felt the gesture. In a lab version, people who had just received a kindness went on to be more generous to someone else.20

ALSO OBSERVED

The held door, the neighbor’s shoveled walk — and how far they travel.
